API keys & providers

Every key in Tempovi is optional. Your daily plan, 7-Day Plan, season plan, scores and statistics are calculated on your iPhone and work without any key at all. A key only switches on an extra, like the coach chat or route planning.

How keys work in Tempovi:

• You bring your own key and you pay the provider directly, if their service costs anything. Tempovi never adds a fee.
• Keys are stored in the iOS Keychain on your phone.
• Requests go straight from your phone to the provider. There is no Tempovi server in between.
• Never share a key. Anyone who has it can spend your credit.
• Backups include your AI and voice keys. Keep backup files somewhere safe (more).

AI coach (reasoning)

The AI provider powers the coach chat, run reviews, coach’s notes, the weekly report, food photo recognition and lab import. Tempovi supports six choices. You only need one.

The agentic coach lets the coach look up individual runs and metric histories itself, for deeper answers in Chat and Run Reviews. Providers that support it are marked tools in the provider list. It’s on by default and you can switch it off with Agentic coach (tools). With OpenAI or Custom, the coach still works. It just answers from the summary it’s given.

Adding your AI key

The steps in Tempovi are the same for every provider:

1. Create a key on the provider’s website (see the provider sections below) and copy it.
2. In Tempovi, open Settings › AI Coach › AI Provider & Model.
3. Tap the provider list and choose your provider.
4. Under API Key, tap 📋 Paste.
5. Tap Verify & Save. Tempovi makes a tiny test call. When it works, the button shows ✓ Verified & Saved.
6. Tap ↻ Refresh models and pick a model from the chips, or type the model name.

Each provider keeps its own key and model. You can switch between providers without re-entering keys.

Which model should I pick?

The default model for each provider is a good all-rounder for chat and run reviews. For food photo recognition (and importing a flight screenshot in Travel mode), the model must be able to read images. Check the table above.

Anthropic

1. Go to platform.claude.com and sign in or create an account.
2. Add credit under Billing. The API is prepaid, so a new key won’t work until your account has credit.
3. Open Settings › API keys, tap Create key, give it a name, and copy it. Anthropic shows the full key only once. It starts with sk-ant-.
4. In Tempovi, choose Anthropic, paste the key and tap Verify & Save.

Models: claude-sonnet-5-5 (default) is the best balance of quality and cost. claude-haiku-5-5 is faster and cheaper. Tempovi doesn’t suggest the top-tier Opus models because they cost several times more, but you can type one in if you want. All Claude models read images. ↻ Refresh models loads Anthropic’s current list.

DeepSeek

1. Sign up at platform.deepseek.com.
2. Top up your balance. Usage is deducted from it.
3. Create a key on the API keys page and copy it.
4. In Tempovi, choose DeepSeek, paste the key and tap Verify & Save.

Models: deepseek-flash (default, fast and low-cost). DeepSeek doesn’t publish a model list for this connection, so type another model name if you want one. According to DeepSeek’s docs, the Flash model can read images and the Pro models can’t. If you pick a Pro model, Tempovi uses Flash for food photos.

GLM · Z.ai

1. Sign up at the Z.ai Open Platform.
2. Add credit to your account.
3. Create a key on the API Keys page and copy it.
4. In Tempovi, choose GLM · Z.ai, paste the key and tap Verify & Save.

Models: glm-5.3-flash (default, low-cost, reads images) and glm-4.7-flash (cheaper still). Most other GLM models are text-only. If you pick one, Tempovi uses glm-5.3-flash for food photos.

Kimi · Moonshot

1. Sign up at platform.moonshot.ai. Use the international platform, not a Kimi app subscription. The consumer Kimi app doesn’t include API credit.
2. Add a payment method and recharge your balance.
3. Create a key on the API Keys page of the console and copy it.
4. In Tempovi, choose Kimi · Moonshot, paste the key and tap Verify & Save.

Models: kimi-k2.6 (default) reads images. The flagship kimi-k3 costs about three times more; you can type it in if you want it. Moonshot retires older models regularly. If a model stops working, Tempovi falls back to the default.

OpenAI

1. Sign in at platform.openai.com.
2. Buy prepaid credit under Settings › Billing. A key on an account without credit is rejected.
3. Create a key on the API keys page and copy it. It starts with sk-.
4. In Tempovi, choose OpenAI, paste the key and tap Verify & Save.

Models: gpt-6-luna (default, low-cost) and gpt-6.1-sol (stronger). Both read images. Tempovi doesn’t suggest the flagship models because they cost much more, but ↻ Refresh models loads every chat model your account can use. OpenAI doesn’t support the agentic coach in Tempovi.

A ChatGPT subscription is separate from the API. It doesn’t give you API credit.

Custom (OpenAI-compatible)

Use Custom · OpenAI-compatible for any service that offers an OpenAI-style chat API, such as Groq, Mistral, or a model running on your own computer with Ollama or LM Studio.

1. Choose Custom · OpenAI-compatible.
2. Enter the Base URL of the service. This is the address that ends just before /chat/completions, for example https://api.groq.com/openai/v1. The service’s documentation lists it.
3. Paste the service’s API key and tap Verify & Save.
4. Tap ↻ Refresh models, or type the model name exactly as the service spells it.

Note

Custom providers don’t support the agentic coach. If you use DeepSeek, GLM or Kimi, pick their own entry in the list instead of Custom, so you get the agentic coach.

Voice input (speech-to-text)

Voice input adds a 🎤 button to the coach chat, the Statistics, Biology, Labs and other data chats, and food logging. You speak, it transcribes, and in the coach chat it sends automatically. The AI coach providers can’t transcribe audio, so voice input uses its own key.

1. Open Settings › Integrations › Voice Input and switch on Speak to the coach.
2. Pick a Transcription model:
   • Groq · whisper-large-v3-turbo (default): fast, accurate, and Groq has a free plan.
   • Groq · whisper-large-v3: slightly more accurate, a bit slower.
   • OpenAI · gpt-transcribe: very accurate, paid (about half a cent per minute).
3. Create a key:
   • Groq: sign up at console.groq.com and create a key on the API Keys page. It starts with gsk_. The free plan has daily limits. You can see yours on the Limits page in the console.
   • OpenAI: use a key from platform.openai.com/api-keys. It can be the same key as your AI coach key. Your OpenAI account needs credit.
4. Paste the key and tap Save.

Only the audio clip is sent to the transcription service.

Routes & maps

Route generation builds a running loop of the distance you need, starting from where you are. It uses openrouteservice, a free service run by HeiGIT (Heidelberg Institute for Geoinformation Technology).

1. Sign up for a free account at openrouteservice.org.
2. In the dashboard, request a token (the free Standard plan) and copy it.
3. In Tempovi, open Settings › Apple Watch & Routes › Route Generation.
4. Paste it under OpenRouteService key and tap Save & verify.

The free Standard plan includes about 2,000 route requests a day, far more than you’ll need (plans). Only your start point and target distance are sent.

The map itself, place search and turn cues need no key.

Flight lookup

In Travel mode (Travel Projection, opened from the 7-Day Plan), 🔎 Look up turns a flight number and date into the destination and arrival time. It uses AeroDataBox through the RapidAPI marketplace.

1. Create a RapidAPI account at rapidapi.com.
2. Search for AeroDataBox and subscribe to the free Basic plan.
3. Copy your RapidAPI key (shown as X-RapidAPI-Key on the API’s page).
4. In Tempovi, open Settings › Integrations › Flight Lookup, paste it under AeroDataBox (RapidAPI) key and tap Save.

The Basic plan has a small monthly allowance (400 units as of October 2026), which is plenty for occasional trip planning. Without a key, Tempovi asks your AI coach for its best guess instead. Only the flight number and date are sent.

No key needed

These services are free and need no setup:

• Weather and heat forecasts: Open-Meteo.
• Food database and barcode scanning: Open Food Facts.
• Route maps: OpenTopoMap tiles.
• Place search (when you set a route destination): Photon by Komoot.
• Junction cues for watch navigation: OpenStreetMap data via the Overpass API.
• Google Drive upload of a diagnostics file (Developer mode only): you sign in with your Google account. There is no key to copy.

Costs & safety

• What it costs. For most people, the AI coach costs a few cents a day or less. It costs more if you chat a lot, use the agentic coach (more tokens per answer) or pick a top-tier model. Voice input on Groq’s free plan, routes and flight lookup are free.
• Track your spending. Settings › AI Coach › AI Usage shows this month’s AI calls and tokens by feature, with an estimated cost. Your actual balance is in your provider’s console.
• Set a limit at the provider. Most consoles let you set a monthly spending limit, or simply don’t turn on auto top-up. Prepaid credit means you can never spend more than you put in.
• Remove a key. For the AI coach, tap Remove Key in AI Provider & Model. For voice input, routes or flight lookup, clear the field and tap Save.
• Rotate a key. If a key may have leaked, for example a backup file was shared, delete it in the provider’s console. It stops working right away. Then create a new one and paste it into Tempovi.
• Backups. Back Up All Settings includes all your keys (AI, voice, routes and flight lookup), so treat the file like a password. Diagnostics exports never contain keys.

Troubleshooting keys

“API key not working” or Verify & Save fails

• No credit. Most AI providers need prepaid credit before a key works. Check your balance in the provider’s console.
• Copied incompletely. Keys are long. Copy the key again in full and use 📋 Paste. Make sure there’s no space or line break.
• Wrong provider. A key only works with the provider that issued it. For example, an OpenAI key won’t work with Anthropic selected.
• Wrong or retired model. Tap ↻ Refresh models and pick a model from the list.
• Network. Check your connection and try again. If you use a VPN or content filter, it may block the provider.

If an AI request fails, the plan falls back to the standard calculation, so you always get a session.

Food photos don’t work

The selected model probably can’t read images. Choose a model marked “Yes” for food photos in the table above.

“Voice input not set up”

Switch on Speak to the coach in Settings › Integrations › Voice Input, paste a key and tap Save. A Groq key must be used with a Groq model and an OpenAI key with an OpenAI model.

Route generation says the key was rejected

Copy the token from your openrouteservice dashboard again in full, paste it, and tap Save & verify.
